About EECA
Egyptian Electric Cooperative Association is a not-for-profit service cooperative owned by those who receive our services (called member-owners). We are governed by a nine-person board elected from among the member-owners. Board members hold three-year terms, with three directors elected each year at an annual meeting.
From 1940, when 224 members on a 95-mile-long line in
Jackson and Randolph counties were the first to receive power from the cooperative, Egyptian Electric has been an important part of the economic and social development of the region. Today, with headquarters in Steeleville and a district office in Murphysboro, we provide electric service to more than 14,000 meters over a distribution network of nearly 2,150 miles of line.
In the late 1950’s, our leaders and those from SouthEastern Illinois Electric Cooperative, Eldorado, and Southern Illinois Electric Cooperative, Dongola, recognized that having control over the source of wholesale power would determine our destiny and future. In 1964, the Southern Illinois Power Cooperative Generating plant at the Lake of Egypt was put on-line with 99 megawatts of steam generating power.
Today, SIPC has grown to over 400 megawatts of generating capacity with six distribution cooperative members. While increasing generating capacity, SIPC has reduced sulfur dioxide by over 11,000 tons and nitrogen oxide emissions by over 6,500 tons annually and uses Illinois coal to fuel its boilers.
Since our organization in 1938, we have been motivated by our core mission of “ improving the quality of life of our members at a reasonable cost.” This mission has guided us as we have achieved, and still maintain today, a reputation as an electric supplier more than capable of meeting the growing and diverse needs of its service area in Southern Illinois. Serving farms, homes, commercial establishments and industrial users in portions of six counties, Egyptian Electric has long demonstrated its ability to provide high-quality electric service at attractive rates.
We benchmark our efforts by our four core values: integrity, accountability, teamwork and commitment to community. At Egyptian Electric, we ask our employees to serve you based on these values and we make management decisions based on the same values. In other words, we desire to truly live up to your expectations!
